Mary Katherine Harbin, area manager for the Tennessee-based company, volunteered to help out.<br \/>\n\u201cI went out that night and ran a paver \u2014 a 1055 on a four-lane road \u2014 and it was the most empowering feeling,\u201d she says. \u201cThen I looked around and said, \u2018If I can do it, and I have a degree in English, anybody can do this if they want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Turning Inspiration into Action<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Inspired by her experience at a recent Caterpillar Women in Leadership Conference, frustrated by the fact that Maymead was struggling to fill open positions and armed with the knowledge that women make up just 2% of the employee base in construction, Harbin took action.<\/p>\n<p>She began running ads geared toward women, making it clear that paving experience wasn\u2019t a requirement to be hired. She also played up the \u201cwomen only\u201d aspect of the crew, believing it would help applicants feel less intimidated about taking on something new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to know anything about what we do,\u201d Harbin says. \u201cWe will train you. We can train anybody that\u2019s willing to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w3wbf_ZvgwA?fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;version=3\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hear from Mary Katherine Harbin and her all-female paving crew<\/p>\n<p>But recruiting female pavers wasn\u2019t her only challenge. Harbin also had to convince Maymead\u2019s predominantly male workforce that a women-only crew was a good plan. It didn\u2019t take her long to bring them around to her way of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a number\u2019s guy,\u201d says Wiley Roark, president of Maymead (and Mary Katherine\u2019s father). \u201cWhen Mary Katherine explained it statistically, it became apparent to me that there was a pool of people that were probably not being reached by our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Proving Themselves on the Job<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Pulling together a group of women undaunted by the hard work, long hours and hot conditions of paving didn\u2019t take long, either. Maymead\u2019s all-female crew went to work in August 2018, just a few months after Harbin proposed the idea. After earning their stripes on the job using existing machines, they took the controls of new Cat\u00ae paving equipment marked with a special pink racer stripe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was excited about coming aboard,\u201d says Bianca Witherspoon, one of the crew members. \u201cWe\u2019re coming together and doing something that society stereotypes as a man\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And once Maymead\u2019s male workers saw the results the crew was delivering on the job, any hesitations they may have had about the women-only initiative went out the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese ladies are doing a great job,\u201d says Chris Barlowe, Maymead\u2019s operations manager. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing they can\u2019t do and they\u2019re proving it every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>\u201cTHESE LADIES ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.
